When many people hear the word “boutique”, they imagine a classy (or quirky) clothing store in an upscale metropolitan block. If you are like most people, your bank account tingles with fear when it witnesses typical “boutique” prices. But what does “boutique” really mean?

Boutique connotes two realities: small and sophisticated. You will notice, it does NOT necessarily mean expensive. Though boutique retailers are frequently pricy (low-volume, high-ticket model), boutique firms take a wide variety of forms. Particularly relevant for this blog, boutique firms can, at times, provide more value at a lower price than large companies.

My thesis in this piece is as follows: Boutique marketing strategy consulting firms can be more valuable to your SaaS company than large firms.

But, I am getting ahead of myself! Let me back up and explain why marketing strategy even matters, and why it matters especially right now.

Marketing strategy is a core part of a healthy, durable sales pipeline for SaaS companies. When SaaS companies are young and small, they rely primarily on their own relational/network connections for qualified leads. As SaaS companies mature and pursue YoY growth, leads derived from their relational network usually cannot provide the volume they are looking for. Soon, pipeline sustainability becomes an important theme of conversation for maturing companies. At this point, some companies stall out or begin to wither. The companies that overcome this “obstacle of adolescence” often do so by leaning into marketing.

Marketing strategy, therefore, is an important element of mature SaaS companies. However, I argue that marketing strategy has rarely mattered more than it does right now

Answer: The SaaS business climate is changing at a rapid rate right now. Here are a few of my recent observations about the Saas market

  • New competitors are emerging each month.

  • Pricing models are shifting/reacting to both client demands and competitors’ decisions

  • Customers' expectations about pricing and service delivery timelines are changing.


In sum, the marketing strategy that provided healthy top-of-funnel growth last year might be starting to break down (be outdated). And so, marketing strategy consulting is essential for SaaS companies. To succeed in our current business climate, companies must speak clearly, frequently, in the right way, and in the right places. They must speak to both their prospects and existing customers. Their tastes, choices, and realities are always shifting – whether or not you’re keeping up.
